Terrafugia's production prototype of its Transition street-legal airplane took flight for the first time just over a week ago, the company announced on Monday. The first flight took place in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Friday, March 23, the company said. The flight lasted for eight minutes, staying in the airport vicinity, and reached an altitude of 1,400 feet above ground level. The flight "demonstrated the controllability and safe operational characteristics of the aircraft," the company said. An earlier version of the airplane flew in 2009, providing data that helped in the design of the current prototype. The current version is scheduled to complete the flight testing required to qualify as a light sport aircraft, with first deliveries expected within a year. Click here to see video....

A French company says it's preparing to certify as an LSA an amphibious aircraft that can also be equipped with skis. The Akoya, developed by Lisa Aircraft, first flew in 2007 and has been flying regularly ever since, according to the company. Along the way, they say it has proved the validity of several design innovations, including a pair of seafoils that give it stability in the water and serve as the surface-tension-breaking mechanism for getting it unstuck on takeoff. The aircraft sports an electrically powered canopy, retractable gear and folding wings, but has a useful load of more than 500 pounds as an LSA, the company says.
Lisa says the aircraft will get airborne at 13 knots and reach the LSA-mandated speed limit of 120 knots with a range of up to 1,000 miles. It's powered by a tail-mounted Rotax 912 ULS in tractor configuration and there are plans for a hybrid version with solar cells on the wings and horiz...

Each year, as the official record keeper for United States aviation, the National Aeronautic Association tracks dozens of world and national record attempts. New U.S. records are certified and those qualifying as world records are then ratified with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). At the end of each year, under the direction of the Contest and Records Department, a list of the “most memorable” is created. Here’s a glimpse of the Class of 2011:
Stan Buddenbohm threw his balsa wood and carbon fiber model glider into the air in an airship hangar and it flew there for 1 minute and 52 seconds, breaking the previous duration record he had set in 2010. See it fly on YouTube.
Boeing pilots Michael Carriker, Chad Lundy, Gregory McCann, William Roberson, Rodney Skaar, and Christine Walsh set a new distance record of 11,894 miles in their 787...

SEBRING -- EAA Chapter 1240 had extra reason to celebrate at their monthly pancake breakfast this past weekend.
On February 11, EAA Chapter 1240, on behalf of the Young Eagles, accepted a $1,500 check presented by the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo during the monthly pancake breakfast. These funds, raised by an aircraft auction held during the 8th annual Expo this past January, will be used towards the building fund of local EAA Chapter 1240 and the Young Eagles.
The Experimental Aircraft Association, known in the aviation community as EAA, was founded in 1953 and is based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Each summer Oshkosh is the home of the World's largest Fly-in Convention, AirVenture.
Sebring's local EAA Chapter 1240 is very involved in youth aviation education, and place their major focus on the EAA Young Eagles program. Young Eagles is designed t
